10 Things Your Baby (Probably) Doesn’t Need

In his article at Better Parenting, Eppie Vojt lists down 10 things that your baby doesn't need.
While I agree that many parents, especially new parents, fall prey to marketing campaigns and buy hundreds of items they don't really need to make baby happy and healthy, there are items that do make life as a new parent a tad bit easier. Sure, the baby doesn't need a bath tub, but think of the water you save by using a smaller one instead of the real one. And yes, a baby can be changed anywhere, even on the floor, but if you have a bad back or forgetful like me and ends up marching around the entire house to search for the opened pack of wipes, a designated place may be well worth the purchase.
I share his opinion on the wipes warmer, infant positioners and fancy entertainers and toys, but sorry, I consider baby carrier a must-have. It is much more convenient than a stroller especially for city moms, and an absolute lifesaver for those with high-need babies. I've never quite mastered those cloth slings, but some friends say they're especially great for breastfeeding moms on the go.
At the end of the day, if you're shopping for your baby (toddlers, schoolers or teens, too), it is important to think about your purchases and how they fit your needs. What I always recommend new moms: buy as the need arises. Don't get swallowed by the hype. Assess how much you need it, and how much you'll be willing to pay to address that need.

Ruth – I’m glad you enjoyed the article and agreed with some of my suggestions. I’m actually also glad you disagreed. My hope was to encourage people to think a little more critically about what they purchase for their children, even if their needs might differ significantly from mine.
Of all the things I noted, a baby carrier seems to be the one most folks disagree with. We bought one but rarely used it, opting instead to hold our children. I just found the carrier awkward to use. Maybe if I gave it more of a chance, I would have learned to love it.
Anyway, I loved reading your response and I hope to see you over at Better Parenting again!
