A Doula by Your Side

via Creative-ReporterI had never heard of the word doula until I became pregnant. When I entered my second trimester and started reading more about birth plans and the options that were available to me, my midwife asked me if I would be interested in a doula. I instantly dreaded it to be some kind of a medication that I would need to take during labor (this is my first pregnancy, so I am gradually overcoming my ignorance!) but was pleasantly surprised when I was told that a doula is actually someone who is there to emotionally support you through labor and delivery.
Wait a minute I thought, isn't that supposed to be my partner's role? Sure it is, but chances are he is not an experienced caregiver in such a situation and while his presence is invaluable, taking advantage of the services of a doula can be a worthwhile prospect.
Nurses and doctors can get distracted by medical tasks and other patients but a doula will be by your side all the way through your labor and delivery journey. Doulas do not provide medical advice but are trained in providing emotional and physical comfort. They offer a depth of knowledge about the birthing experience and can guide you in several comfort measures that include breathing techniques, massage and using a birth ball, among many others. Overall, the presence of a doula intends to reduce stress and allows you to experience a special kind of comfort during labor and delivery.
Having a doula by my side is an idea that is increasingly appealing to me now that I am in my third trimester and thinking more and more about my baby's birth. A helpful site to find out more information about doulas is www.doulanetwork.com.
I am curious to know if any readers of this blog had a doula by their side during their labor and delivery. If so, how was your experience?

Thanks for sharing that Melissa. I am looking forward to meeting a doula soon and discussing my birth plan with her. Sounds like a wonderful option.
