Antibiotics

And when kids come home sniffling and sneezing, parents are quick to self-medicate. In their rush to make it all better, parents have been known to give kids antibiotics. Not knowing that this could actually do more harm than good.
Why?
An antibiotic is a drug that kills or slows the growth of bacteria, not viruses. It does not help fight viruses (like the common cold and flu) and taking antibiotics could actually increase the risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
Parents, beware!
As parents, it is our responsibility to inform ourselves; to make sure that we do not put our kids at risk.
Check out CDC's guide on how antibiotics work. Read the facts about antibiotics and what you can do to protect yourself and your child. In addition, you can print out their chart of illnesses to know when it is appropriate to use antibiotics.
Breaking the Antibiotic Habit: A Parent's Guide to Coughs, Colds, Ear Infections, and Sore Throats would also be a good investment. It aims to give you more info on how to help your child feel better - without antibiotics. Think of it as a worthy supplement for your What to Expect the Toddler Years book.
And when in doubt, bring your child to your Pediatrician.
