Are your kids' toys safe?
Filed in archive Health by Melissa Petri on August 23, 2007

Right after I read the toy recalls this month, I immediately swept through my boys' toys and threw out all the toys from the manufacturer. Although there were only a few toys in the toy recall list that was in my sons' collection, due to my paranoia, I decided to throw everything away. Thank god that my 4 year-old is already through with the "eating/licking
the toys" phase, but my 1 year-old is in danger since he just started playing and licking his' and his brother's toys. I can't bear the idea that he might come across toys with high lead content. That would be a nightmare, hence the decision to throw everything away. I have nothing against Mattel. In fact, I find it very courageous of the company to actually issue a recall right away, rather than sweep the problem under the rug to protect their name.Questions came to mind. For instance, how could we protect our children from toys that might contain hazardous products? How can we, as parents, decide which toys to buy for our babies/kids?
Thanks to parent for providing suggestions and practical tips on what to look for in toys. Most of us know these guidelines, but we somehow tend to forget or put the issue aside, hence putting our kids in possible danger.
Suggestions 1-5 and 7 are familiar to me, however I think I did not foresee suggestion 6. Which is a very good advice, since we also have toys lying around manufactured in the 60's and the pre-War era. Which means that I have to make another sweep of my sons' toys #:-S
