Child Depression
Filed in archive In the Spotlight by Melissa Petri on July 12, 2005
"Stunned family members were struggling to come to grips yesterday with the death of an 11-year-old Brooklyn girl, a straight-A student and altar girl who took her own life," reports Daily News in this article.

What could be so bad that an 11-year old child would commit suicide?

The article continues with some disturbing facts: "Suicide is rare among children under 14, but hundreds of kids in this age group take their lives every year."It is difficult for most adults to imagine that a young child could suffer from depression but they do. Problems which may seem little could cause depression in children. They can't just snap out of it. A hug will not cure everything, no matter how much you may want it to.

As parents, we need to be more vigilant in spotting depression. Read more about this illness, consult a physician and give your child the support and love he/she needs.

Depression CAN be treated.
