Coping with work and parenthood
Filed in archive Politics of Parenting on November 30, 2005

All moms are working moms. We all do what we have to do in order to become good parents and to raise a good child.
For those who are gainfully employed, we try to arrange our schedule around our children's needs. Despite the fact that employment is in the equation, our children will always be our number one priority.
In any case, it is important for working moms to have a supportive husband (or relative), an understanding employer and childcare support you can trust.
How do I cope? What do I do to ensure that both my role as a parent/wife and as an employee is balanced?
At work...
- I have no qualms telling my boss how it really is. I make it clear that I will do my best at work BUT my family still is my #1 priority.
- I make sure that I am always way ahead of my deadline. It gives me enough leeway to ensure that my work does not suffer should anything come up which would prevent me from coming to work.
With my family...
- I make sure that I take the day off whenever there is a presentation at the kindergarten, no matter how small my son's role is. Precious is the sight of his proud smiling and happy face. He feels loved and I feel proud.
- Whenever I have to go on a business trip, I make sure that I call to say goodnight. In addition, I always bring home a little gift (whether bought at the airport or at the Gas station) for my son.
- I make sure that I bring a picture of my family to keep me company at night while I am alone at the hotel

After a long day at work, the smile on our son's face is like an adrenaline to our tired body. As parents, we owe it to ourselves and our children to make sure that the smile will always be there.

Hi,
I am one of those working moms, too. And actually, I am just starting to feel and realize at the same time how hard career mothers are going through with everyday. I just gave birth 3 months ago and just stared working last month. And so, being a mother and a working mom is just a new experience to me. However, I really feel the pressure of doing two things at the same time. My work is a home-based one, and ignoring my baby cries would mean a thousand guilts for me. Eventhough all the above statements on the article are true in nature, I still believe that doing the suggestions mentioned is still hard to keep. Though, I believe too that it is just a matter of practice.

We produce animated DVD's for kids celebrating the lives of inspiring African Americans. I'm the Art Director co-owner of the company ( and web person ), actress Karyn Parsons is the founder. Following is a bit more information on our first release;
Have you heard the story of Henry Box Brown?
When actress Karyn Parsons (best known for her role as Hilary Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air) first heard his amazing story, she decided to create Sweet Blackberry, a series of educational animated DVDs remembering the lives of forgotten American heroes: men and women of color whose adventures will live with our children for generations to come. Narrated by Emmy Award-Winning “Desperate Housewives” star Alfre Woodard, Sweet Blackberry’s debut DVD, The Journey of Henry Box Brown, tells the true story of slave Henry Box Brown, a man who mailed himself in a wooden box from a plantation in Richmond, Virginia to freedom in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
