Disabled Parents

Disabled Parents

If you are DISABLED, according to the dictionary, it means that you are unable or unfit; or that your cabability is weakened or destroyed; that you are incapacitated.

People who are disabled need help, special care and/or support.

People who are disabled also get pregnant. And many are uncomfortable when this happens because they are afraid that disabled parents will be unable to cope or take the additional responsibility.

I can only imagine how much of a challenge it is to be a disabled parent. However, Carrie Ann Lucas — who is legally blind, confined to a wheelchair and uses a ventilator to breath — is proving that it can be managed.

Not only is she raising three disabled children with an aide's help, she is also "devoting her life to helping people like herself experience the joys of parenthood".

Among others, Carrie has helped a deaf woman whose children were taken away because she couldn't hear their cries.

In my humble opinion, giving disabled parents more options for support (from the government and their families) should help them cope and enjoy the joys of parenting. I really hope that more ideas will be explored and made available to make this possible.

Check out Parents with Disabilities Online, a great resource for disabled parents.
