Empty Nest Syndrome

The empty nest syndrome refers to the grief or depression parents fall under when the last child has left home to be more independent. It leaves parents feeling overwhelmed. Suddenly, there is no one there to be taken care of. They feel as if no one needs them and some even realize how much of their marriage depend on the kids.

Last year, my youngest sister moved out of the house and moved to another country. She was the last one home. As expected, both my parents suffered light depression. They were supportive and happy that all their offspring have spread their wings but they could not hide the sadness in their eyes.

To keep them occupied, both took off their retirement suits and became proactive. It has been a year and they both seem to be coping well. After years of taking care of 4 kids, they now can be selfish and finally think of what THEY truly want rather than what might be the best for the kids, even if it isn't really what they want.

Should you or anyone you know be facing this situation anytime soon, TroubleWith can help you understand and cope with the changes that will happen. O, the Oprah Magazine even has a few tips to help parents fill the void.

Enjoy your second life!
