Gardening Kits for Kids

Gardening Kits for Kids

After a long cold spell, it looks like spring is finally almost here. Time to get the soil, gardening tools and flower seeds ready! It's also a great weekend activity for the children of all ages. I know mine are always eager to help in an activity where they are at liberty to dig soil and get themselves all dirty!

If you'd rather have your plots and planters all properly done, though, it might be a better idea to have your kids go their own gardening project. It's a good way to learn about responsibility, too. For younger kids, you can get them motivated by choosing plants that grow fast (like herbs or perhaps narcissus bulbs) so they could see the fruits of their labor rather quickly. Or perhaps a fairy tale seed kit, so they can grow Cinderella's Magic Pumpkin, Jack's Magic Beans and the Princess' Pea? It's a great way to get them interested in gardening. The only problem is, they might actually expect the beanstalk the reach the sky!

I thought your readers would enjoy an activity I saw at a demonstration at the National Science Teachers Association Conference.
Have you or your children “Ever Seen a Plant Move When You Tickle It?”

If you want to share your love for nature with your children, here is an activity I have done with mine. This may change the way you and the kids react to plants for ever. Imagine giving your children some seeds. Having them watch them sprout and grow. Then shortly after the second leaves appear they tickle the plant and it moves its branches down and closes its leaves! Give them a learning experience they will never forget.
