Hi-Tech School Security
Filed in archive In the Spotlight on October 18, 2006
In the Spring Independent School in Houston, students are monitored as they arrive and leave the school building via a radio frequency tag. Riding the school bus also means identifying themselves by swiping their ID tags. And while they are in the school's premises, 1,000 cameras are pointed at every corner. Of course, not only the students but also visitors -- be they parents or utility men -- need to show their identification cards.
Big Brother goes to school.
Had this security upgrade been implemented years ago, parents and students would definitely have problems with the big brother-ish I-am-spying-on-you kind of security. However, with the recent instances of students shooting fellow students and strangers shooting students & teachers, everyone is probably heaving a big sigh of relief.
It's terrible, though, that we cannot even be sure anymore of our children's safety in school due to the increasing number of people with lost souls.
