I grew up studying in private, catholic schools. Just like everyone else in my family... just like most of the people I know. As for my son... well, we've been looking at bilinggual schools, international schools (which are way beyond our budget) and montesorris. None of the choices I have in mind includes home schooling. With my background (or lack thereof, depending on who is checking), one would not be surprised.
However, you cannot ignore the fact that home schooling's popularity is growing. Should you be interested to learn the way Thomas Edison, dakota fanning and Jane Austen were schooled, check out theweekmagazine.com's interesting brief, "When School is at Home."
