Since ear infection is a hot topic of the week because of the 19A strain, it made me think about prevention. I am being proactive about dealing with ear infections, since I (and most parents with kids) know just how nasty it can get when my children succumbs to it.
I searched the Net and found easy ways to avoid it. Thanks to WedMD for providing the much needed information.
1. Don't smoke near your child or inside the house. Further, change your clothes or better yet, take a bath after you smoke, since fumes from the clothes and hair affects the child.
2. Breast feed. Mother's milk is always the best. If you are bottle feeding your kid, just make sure that he/she is not lying down when you're feeding since the milk may flow into his ears, specifically in his Eustachian tube that might become a breeding ground for organisms.
3. Wash hands as often as possible.
4. Immunization, although that might not always be the case.
5. Keep him/her away from kids with other infections.
6. Use pacifiers only until 6 months of age.

"Xylitol" in place of sugar has been shown to reduce the occurence of ear infections by 40% on a consistent basis. Check it out! It stimulates many of the good bacteria in the mouth as opposed to the bad bacteria that sugar brings out. It can be used in every way that sugar is, and replaces it in recipes on a 1 for 1 basis. Cook your own good stuff or make your own healthy ice cream. Of course, you do have to wait until they are eating solid foods, and you should be breastfeeding until then if you care at all about your child's health. Rory
