There are benefits to having pets. They bring out our nurturing instinct. Pets are therapeutic and somehow helps us relieve stress. And for kids, there are even more benefits that we could count on.

Taking care of pets would teach kids responsibility, discipline and patience. Plus, they will always have good memories of romping around the garden with the pet they care for and love.

If you are planning on getting a pet for your child, here are a few must reads before you head on out to the pound or to a breeder of your choice:

Check out SFSPCA's Rough Guide to Kids and Pets for the basics.

Ivillage has an interesting Beginner's guide to becoming a pet owner.

For our own kids' safety, keep in mind that it is also important for parents to find the best dog or cat (or any other pet) for the kids. A decision (a compromise, if need be) based on what you think is right for your child and what your child wants.
