Lactose is a sugar found in milk. And there are people whose digestive system are unable to break down lactose into glucose. These people are Lactose Intolerant.

Some kids are born unable to produce lactase. In some, lactase deficiency develops over time.

It is sometimes difficult to detect lactase deficiency since most of us automatically think that milk is always good for our kids. But, best be aware of the symptoms in order to avoid the constant occurence of gas, diarrhea or bloating. Could my child be lactose intolerant? is a great starting point for general information on lactose intolerance.

Should your child be lactose intolerant, note that he/she need not go through life without calcium (which he/she needs for good, strong bones). The USDA has a nifty Milk for Kids with Lactose Intolerance to help your child's calcium needs.

In any case, it is best to consult with your local health provider for the DOs and DONTs.
