"The MIT Media Lab has launched a new research initiative to develop a $100 laptop—a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world's children. To achieve this goal, a new, non-profit association, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), has been created. The initiative was first announced by Nicholas Negroponte, Lab chairman and co-founder, at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland in January 2005."
According to Nicholas Negroponte, founding chairman of MIT's Media Laboratory, children in developing nations would use these laptops to study and for play.
Why give it away? How is it possible to produce 100$ laptops? Why not a desktop? How will it work? Just some of the questions which were answered by Mr. Negroponte. Check it out here.
My roots are in the Philippines, a third world country. I have seen people live in poverty. I have seen their vacant stares and the hopelessness in their eyes.
I have always believed that education is the key to "escape". It truly is heartening to see organizations such as One Laptop per Child (OLPC) take some initiative to help save people from poverty.

My son is 3 Years old and is playing around with my computer. Nowadays a Computer is nothing more than a Radio was for our parents, except that it can be a great source of Information and you can use it where ever you want. I Think only one Computer could give a lot of peaple a great chance in the third world.
