New Findings on SIDS

New Findings on SIDS

Even with my firstborn, I have felt paranoia about SIDS. And with the recent news of the death of an aquaintance's 3-month old child due to SIDS, I am even more paranoid with checking my 2-month old child's sleeping state.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is also known as cot death and crib death. It's the sudden and unexplained death (even after a postmortem investigation) of an apparently healthy infant aged one month to one year.

And now, the good news…

It looks a lot like scientists are a step closer to figuring out the real cause of SIDS. "…believe that they have found the underlying cause of cot death, a condition that claims the lives of hundreds of babies every year."

Research shows that victims had am abnormality in their brains that prevents the detection of insufficient oxygen levels in their body. And because of this, these babies inhale their own exhaled breath and are deprived of oxygen.

This new evidence may just pave the way of detecting (and treating, of course) which babies are at risk before it is too late.

I am looking forward to the day when the term SIDS does not apply anymore and that many parents are spared the heartbreak of losing their babies.

So am I. My husband had a borhter who died from SIDS so it’s always a constant worry in the fmaily whenever some has a new baby even though Doctors said it’s nothing genetic.
