Parens patriae
Parens patriae can be literally translated as the parent of the country. It's when the state act as the guardian of minors who are not in custody of their parents or whose parents are unable to give them the proper care that they need. The same protection is also given to those who are unable to take care of themselves (like those who have mental incapacities).

Whenever the state needs to act in the best interests of the child, Parens patriae is applied.

no child left behind. Saving the children. Idealist slogans behind Parens patriae.

For the children concerned, I truly hope that those who "judge" do more than just follow the books. Compassion should be a must.

Here are a few examples of Parens Patriae at work.

What about YOU? What do you think of Parens Patriae? What needs to be done to ensure that the children involved are continuously given the care that they deserve and need?
