Questions On Computers and Little Ones

I know not all toddlers are fortunate like Damus to have their very own laptop. But what I am trying to portray here is the fact that children these days take on computers and whatever technological gadgets like a fish to water. They are naturally drawn to it and seem to find great ease in using it.
With this natural occuring phenomena, comes more parenting challenges. Below are some questions on the subject that trouble parents today.
How early should I start my child on computers?According to ERIC Counseling and Student Services Clearinghouse, it is not recommended to have children below the age of 3 use computers. Taking into consideration children's stages of development, they say the computer does not help at this point in time. I agree that the computer will not teach a child this young to crawl, walk, or learn social skills. However, parents should remember their recommendation is based on a general guide to children's developmental stages. So do not wait until the day your child turns to 3 and then say "ok, you can turn on the computer now." As a parent, you will know the pace your child is developing. Be sensitive to their needs and act upon their promptings. However, don't be ignorant to the pros and cons to such actions. Which brings me to the next question.
Some say it is good, some say it is bad. Which is it?Whether it be good or bad for young children to use the computer would depend on parental guidance. It is good when: Child is given age appropriate programs, games and activities; Model the use of computer as a place to learn and to attain useful and meaningful information; It's a supplement to non-digital types of learning and play. It does not overshadow other learning opportunities such as reading, creative play, physical activities, arts and craft, music and movement etc....
Rules and guidelines are set such as when and how long. It is bad when: You buy into the commercial notions that if your child do not start as soon as possible, they will fall behind and be unsuccessful in the future; You do not monitor or are not selective in the programs, games and activities; Children view the computer as a source of entertainment; It is the major mode of learning your children is engaged in. Children have lost interest in other non-digital types of learning.
No rules and guidelines are set. Children can play whenever and for however long they want.
What precautionary steps should I take?
Make sure everyone understands the rules and guidelines to using the computer and ENFORCE it. Computer to be placed in a common area that is seen by all; Don't fall into the trap of having the computer as a babysitter
; Be a good model yourself. Your actions must not demonstrate that your time on the computer is more important than spending time with your children. For example, don't get too engrossed in writing your blog that you brush off your child's request to read to him. Children are experts on identifying hypocrites. I am sure everyone can debate non-end whether young children should or should not get started on the computer. As with everything else in life, it has its pros and cons. But whether it be a good influence or not is in the hand of the parents. Be wise and act according to the needs of each individual child.
