RFID for kids
Filed in archive In the Spotlight on July 27, 2005
"An RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) tag is a small object, such as an adhesive sticker, that can be attached to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person. RFID tags contain antennas to enable them to receive and respond to radio-frequency queries from an RFID transceiver. Passive tags require no internal power source," as defined by Wikipedia.

I know, I know, some of you are probably asking now what it has to do with parenting. Well, it could mean A LOT!
Michael of Techware Weblog has featured an interesting twist to this new technology: why infant tagging makes sense. Apparently, "('Hugs') RFID infant protection system has prevented the abduction of a baby at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. Read the full report here.
For more older kids, they're even launching RFID pajamas.
In a perfect world, everyone loves kids and no one would dare harm them. But in reality, that is not how it is. And from what we read on the news, I will not be surprised if several parents do avail of these new products.

If I understand your little blog correct you seem to be a major proponent of RFID's. Melissa are you MAD! Just because something sounds good does not make it good. Do you not see the slippery slope we are heading down if RFID's are used to track ANYONE not just kids. Next thing you know these stamps turn into implants and then the government and anyone else who wants to follow you and trace you can and use the information for what ever they want. I as a father of 2 little girls am the only one that NEEDS to know where my kids are at, and I will gladly take on the responsibility with out the use of some RFID. Sure I can see many "good" uses for RFID's but the negatives far outweight any positives you could ever list.

I think that it is a great idea, I think I have a simpler, better one. I would be willing to discuss this with someone.

Look parents (mostly americans/white) when you decide to have a kid it means thats you will take care of him or her. Dont have a kid and have other people or machines take care of them for you.... These chips are no good.

You can always tell when someone either doesn't have kids or is so naive you wonder what planet they are living on...to "david"--what do you care if I or anyone else feels this added protection for our young children is worth it?? Who are you to judge anyone? Here's a thought..keep your idiot comments to yourself if you cannot discuss a topic like an adult. As for RFIDs..in case you had not heard the number of perverts roaming our neighborhoods is a lot higher now that the Internet is around. It's not like when we grew up and you can actually walk to school or shopping or whatnot without really worrying about these damn pedophiles on the constant prowl for the little ones. Unfortunately, that's the world we live in and stop worrying about that our country will turn into some "minority report" movie where you are charged for crimes you haven't yet committed or tracking your moves...who cares where you go except the people closest to you anyway...you (and most of the rest of us) are simply NOT that important so get over yourself...
I think RFIDs definitely could help protect children from predators and just the fact that they exist would probably make many of these pervs think twice about abducting a child when they could easily be traced...think about it...even if you don't use it the criminal wouldn't know one way or the other..kind of like a gun...if we are all allowed to carry them then the criminals are left wondering IF someone they intend to victimize has one or not...us honest folks need a way to keep the bad guys guessing and I'm sorry you [david] think this is a black & white issue...hardly...you don't like them..don't use them...but don't tell people it should not be used at all..nothing is ever that clear cut these days...
Keep an open mind...peace!
