Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is also known as cot death and crib death. It's the sudden and unexplained death (even after a postmortem investigation) of an apparently healthy infant aged one month to one year.
With this lady's case, she just woke up to find that her baby has turned blue and is dead.
Apparently, there is no 100% way to prevent SIDS from happening. What we, parents, can only do is to reduce the risk. It has been said that the probability of SIDS is increased if the baby...
- is exposed to tobacco smoke
- sleeps on his or her stomach
- is not breastfed
- is overheated due to excess clothing
- has too much beddings around him/her
I've been obssessively checking up on my 2-month old son ever since my friend told me about the death of her friend's son. It's bordering on paranoia since SIDS is so unpredictable.
Should you have an infant in the house, do take extra care, as well. We may not be able to guarantee SIDS not happening but we can greatly reduce the risks.

I lost my son on July 19th 2006, he had just turned 4 months old. It is absolutely devastating. I too would like more answers/facts about SIDS and why this happens to healthy babies.

It has also recently been stated by the American Academy of Pediatrics that pacifier use may help protect against SIDS
