Spanking your Child

Spare the rod and spoil the child
That's the simple translation of what is written on the bible: "He who spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him correcteth him betimes" (Proverbs 13:24)
This topic has sparked many debates regarding child-rearing and discipline. Some find it necessary to spank a child in order to get through them. On the other hand, more and more parents think that spanking does not work.
What is obviously wrong or right to us, adults, may not be easy for kids to understand. That is a given. But with constant reminder, Patience (tons of it!) and a bit of creativity, we can raise our kids without having to resort to physical violence. My two cents.
What about you? How do you discipline your child? Would you resort to spanking your child?

Studies prove physical abuse lowers self-esteem; hence, I’m against spanking.

We prefer to use other discipline methods, like redirection, timeouts, removal of toys or privileges, etc. Spanking, for us, is a last resort and we have only used it on very rare occasions. I just think other forms of discipline are more effective and offer more of an opportunity to teach right from wrong. There is a great debate about spanking at http://www.opposingviews.com/questions/is-spanking-an-acceptable-form-of-discipline Experts from both sides debate the issue and make some very interesting points on the topic.
