The Birds and the Bees

The Birds and the Bees

"Let me tell you bout the birds the bees and the flowers and the trees
And the moon up above and a thing called love"

Some kids ask, some don't.

I have seen a parent's fumbling attempt at explaining the birds and the bees. I had to control myself otherwise, I would have laughed out loud. Yes, I found it funny because, at that time, I wasn't the one put on the hotspot, trying to think of the best answer.

Most parents are not exactly looking forward to the time when they have to explain the facts of life to their children. It's one of those awkward questions which we do not really know exactly how we can explain to our innocent little kids.

As parents, it is our responsibility to establish a comfort level and show our kids that the topic is not taboo. That their questions won't come unanswered if they come to us. Don't wait until they learn it in school. As some have adviced, teaching the kids about the facts of life early could even help prevent child abuse.

Mike over at Mike's stuff asked his son if he knew about the birds and the bees. His son gave him an honest answer, "did you know that bees kill more people every year than sharks do?" That must have resulted in a big sigh of relief. hehe.

What about you? Are you ready to answer about the birds and the bees? How exactly would you explain it?

I am a single mom, so, there is no dad to explain to the kids (3, to be exact, ages 15, 10, 4) what the ‘birds and the bees’ are all about. So far, I have only had to explain it once, to Brenden, my oldest. I’m sure my 10 year old, Shaylin, is not far behind! ( It was at this age that Brenden asked) and for Maylin, my 3 year old, I’ll have the ‘birds and the bees’ speech all worked out and rehearsed for her. I’m so glad that there are support sites for parents in my situation! How would I manage?
