The Pill and It's Benefits
Filed in archive Family Planning , Family Planning by Melissa Petri on September 13, 2007

The Pill is not just one of the most used family planning method. Apart from controlling a woman's ovulation, it also has health benefits such as lowering the rate of anemia and lessening menstrual cramps. And contrary to what most people think, the contraceptive pill can lower the risk of some forms of cancer namely, ovarian and endometrial cancer.
Research shows that taking the Pill for 8 years "did not lead to an increased risk of cancer over a woman's lifetime." The study also showed that "women were protected from the risk of developing cancers for at least 15 years after stopping."
However this is not a guarantee that a woman can avoid cancer since taking the Pill longer than 8 years increases the risk of getting the dreaded disease.
Eventhough the Pill is not my choice of family planning method, I'm not sure if this report would make women happy or not. Since lots of women have used or have been using the Pill for more than 8 years, hence exposing them more from cancer risk. I guess there really is no guarantee of avoiding the disease, hence women should have themselves checked regularly if not to avoid atleast catch the disease early on.
