The Risks of Wheeled Sneakers (Heelys)
Filed in archive Health by Melissa Petri on June 05, 2007

I remember telling myself that if I had a kid, I will never buy him/her a pair of shoes with wheels. A few years back, this skateboard inspired shoes was the "in" thing in Manila. You'd see kids glide through the malls and take the escalator wearing those kinda shoes. And even though I still wasn't a mother then, the thought of my future kid wearing them and falling on his/her back was just too much for me. Plus the fact that kids can get too daring, is just not my cup of tea.
Apparently not everyone is going gaga over these trendy wheeled sneakers. Doctors from Ireland to Singapore are reporting injuries such as broken wrists, dislocated shoulders, cracked skulls as well as one death due to roller-shoe injuries. This resulted to the issuance of a new safety standard by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons that recommends
helmets, wrist protectors and knee and elbow pads for kids who wear wheeled shoes.
So for parents who are thinking of buying their kids these trendy shoes for birthdays or Christmas, better think twice or buy protective gear right away. You really wouldn't want to risk your kids getting a cracked skull.
