Virgin Mobile Australia Sued For Use of Photo
Filed in archive In the Spotlight , Picture Perfect by Melissa Petri on September 24, 2007

Australia's Virgin Mobile is being sued by the family of the Texan girl whose picture appeared on their ad campaign.
Alison Chang, whose picture was downloaded from Flickr was used by Virgin Mobile Australia for their ad campaign called "Are You With Us Or What?". The picture was taken by Alison's youth counselor, Justin Ho-Wee Wong, and posted on his Flickr page.
Over Alison's picture is a slogan written "Dump your pen friend" and "Free text virgin to virgin" below.
Her family is suing the company for libel and invasion of privacy.
This is a reason why we should all be careful in posting pictures online. For all we know, someone is using or used your picture or your kids or family's picture for unwanted Ads or pornography (God forbid!). Alison Chang's case is not isolated. A photo of a 17 year-old student from England was lifted from her Flickr account and used as a cover of Body Magic, a pornographic movie from the company TVX Films.
Here is the original picture of Alison Chang taken by Justin Ho-Wee Wong.
