What constitutes a perfect parent?
Filed in archive Politics of Parenting on June 30, 2005
By no stretch of imagination would I ever be considered a perfect mother. But I do everything that I think is right for my son because I love him and I only want what is best for him.
I believe that most mothers have been doing the same.

However, I do find it distressing when mothers critique other mothers. Some even think that it's their "right" to obsessively compare every little mothering details and even go as far as start lecturing that poor-soul-who-does-not-know-how-to-be-a-mother mother. I call this the "my way is the right way!" lecture.
And then there are those who are forever comparing SAHM and Working Moms. But, that deserves a whole entry all by itself.
Being a mom is already hard, I do not need holier-than-thou moms to make me feel insecure about something which I am already very sensitive about. I say, what works for one may not work for the other. It all depends on the person, the availability of choices (daycare, finances, etc.) and the over-all situation. No one has the right to pass any judgment on any Mother unless that person has stepped into the shoes of the other.
What about the Dads out there? Can you relate? Do you have the same issues with other dads?

I Hate that also. I was talking to a freind the other day and commented how, while I wanted other kids to be on the playground for my son to play with, I almost liked it better when we are alone. I feel like I have to be a different parent when we are around other mothers. I scold my child more so he doesn't do thing the other mothers don't want their kids doing.

Karl W: good to know! :)
Gina: Yes. You feel that there are eyes grading you on what kind of a parent you are. I have even met some who openly criticize. As if their kind of mothering is the only way to go. Oh well...

men are different in that way.
I think that every mother is the "perfect mother" for her kid. Of course you
can't do everything right, but that's how life is. Some kids learn faster
some slower, but at the end, they all learn how to walk, talk and all the
other things that allways get compared by their mothers. Of course its nice
if your boy or girl is advanced. But probably a few month later its
development is a little behind. Thats nothing to worry about so far.
Just listen to your self and you can feel that your kid is doing fine. And
so do you as a parent and don't listen to all the others who know everything
better ...
